On November 30, Christie's is pleased to present the sale of Property from The Vertical Art Collection: Walking Sticks, With A Selection From Vertical Art: The Enduring Beauty Of Antique Canes And Walking Sticks. The collection of 77 lots will be offered in a special section of the 500 Years Decorative Arts Europe auction on November 30. Impressively comprehensive, the collection includes canes and walking sticks from varied materials ranging from jewels, exotic hardwoods, precious hardstones, historic figures and animals, classic Victorian canes, to a doctor’s cane complete with medical instruments. In addition, finely crafted canes by Fabergé will be offered in the Important Russian Art sale in London on November 26. All proceeds will benefit the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation and the University of California San Francisco Thoracic Oncology Lung Cancer Program.
Highlights include a Continental ormolu-mounted nephrite cane made with a handle with a fully sculpted snail amongst naturalistically modeled lush vinery and flowers, late 19th Century, (estimate: $5,000 – 8,000); a French topaz, yellow gold, and acid etched rock crystal cane, depicting a figure of Napoleon within a cage (estimate: $5,000 - $8,000); and a silver and rock crystal cane in the form of a curved bird’s head with ruby eyes, late 19th/early 20th Century, (estimate: $4,000 – 6,000).
