On November 22 & 23, 2014 Wooten and Wooten Auctioneers presents “Fall Estates and Collections,” a high-powered catalog auction uncovering items from noted estates along the East Coast. The rapidly expanding company will offer the collections of noted Clayton, Georgia antique dealer Carl Butler and the late Anita Hill of Jupiter, Florida, as well as exemplary private collections from Greenville, South Carolina and Southampton, New York.
A private Beaufort, South Carolina collection yielded one of the sale’s most influential discoveries, an Edgefield District slave-made face vessel whose caliber rivals Wooten and Wooten’s impressive past stoneware offerings. The newly-discovered face vessel, circa 1860, is one of only eight documented Edgefield examples in pitcher form. Its sale will be an important milestone for Southern stoneware enthusiasts.
In addition to unique stoneware offerings, November’s auction presents a diverse and impressive assemblage that includes a collection of Southern firearms, American and Continental clocks, strong naturalists prints and paintings, American and European needlework samplers, and highly-collectable glass bottles. Wooten and Wooten’s November sale includes multiple, labeled South Carolina State Dispensary bottles in uncommon forms, pieces of Southern history that rarely appear at auction. Further Southern highlights include a signed, dated West Tennessee needlework sampler of particular skill, recently documented by the Tennessee Sampler Survey, and fine pieces from Elizabeth O’Neil Verner and Alfred Hutty. Wooten and Wooten’s artistic offerings are supported by a strong group of ornithological prints, with featured examples by John James Audubon, Mark Catesby, and Edward von Siebold Dingle.
Wooten and Wooten’s “Fall Estates and Collections” will focus on the quality of items curated by discerning collectors. Offerings of a rare orotone by renowned American artist Edward S. Curtis entitled “Cañyon del Muerto”, a George III mahogany breakfront bookcase of exceptional form, a commissioned abstract installation by California artist Michel Tabori and an exquisite Chinese Ming or early Qing Dynasty white jade belt hook demonstrate the strength and diversity found in great American estates.
