Nikolas Soren Goodich LUMINOUS SYMMETRIES
Los Angeles Art Show July 29 - Aug 1, 2021
Los Angeles, CA. (July 12, 2021) Nikolas Soren Goodich will debut his Plexiglass Portraits installation at the LA Art Show from July 29 to August 1, 2021 in Booth 1220, located in the South Hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center (1201 South Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90015).
Well-known in Los Angeles for his signature images of duality rendered as painted facial profiles seen together or apart, Nikolas Soren Goodich was trained at the Rhode Island School of Design, Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Art Institute of Chicago, and completed his undergraduate degree in Painting and Printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University. Goodich’s work, anchored in his African American and European bi-racial heritage, investigates non-gendered portraiture in numerous formal modes. In his unique process, Goodich paints upon clear plexiglass, hand-prints from one panel to another, layers the panels together, and then assembles them onto canvas as diptychs.
The LA Art Show will premier Goodich’s strikingly original layered plexiglass paintings placed within LED, edge-lit frames of his own design. Goodich employs these LED lights to visually amplify the duality between his technologically-advanced presentation, ordinarily associated with the worlds of digital and video art, and the pure, traditional painterly in order to examine the analog with light as a new central component. Goodich’s illuminated paintings are freestanding Light Walls meant to be examined from both sides. The vertical, luminous structures juxtapose pure organic abstraction, derived from Max Ernst’s Frottage techniques, and figuration to manifest in the symbolic language of portraiture.
Goodich’s paintings are simultaneously direct & simple and complex & multi-layered, interweaving layers of abstract mark and figuration with biomorphic textures and unpredictable hyper-saturated color schemes. All result in a unique fusion of the material language of the Los Angeles Light and Space movement and the raw Neo-expressionism of Art Brut.
