Huntington, NY – The Heckscher Museum of Art is pleased to present Ferdinand Richardt’s Niagara: A Study in Landscape Painting. On view December 6 through April 12, 2014, this Permanent Collection examines Ferdinand Richardt’s iconic view of one of America’s most popular tourist sites within the context of American and European landscape painting.

Niagara Falls has been a popular tourist destination since the early 19th century.  Ferdinand Richardt’s Niagara depicts the attraction as it appeared at mid-century, with charming genre elements set against the grand landscape.  Featuring European and American works from the Museum’s Permanent Collection, this exhibition examines Richardt's painting within a broader landscape tradition, including intimate views of East Coast locales and dramatic scenes of the American West by Hudson River School artists, as well as images of man’s multifaceted relationship to water.

(note: Ferdinand Richardt’s Niagara: A Study in Landscape Painting will be temporarily closed March 9 through March 20, 2015)

Also opening on December 6, 2014 is Modern Alchemy: Experiments in Photography on view through March 15, 2015 this exhibition focuses on 20th and 21st century artists who have pushed the boundaries of photography in myriad ways.
