The Art of Narrative: Timeless Tales and Visual Vignettes

Mythic stories, fantastic fables and timeless literary tales come alive through art. Now on view at The Heckscher Museum of Art, the exhibition, The Art of Narrative: Timeless Tales and Visual Vignettes, explores storytelling in art from the 16th through 20th centuries.
The Art of Narrative highlights works from Heckscher Museum’s rich and varied permanent collection. Whether depicting chronicles from the past, beloved literary works, or scenes from everyday life, the 36 works of art in the exhibit prove the adage that “a picture is worth a thousand words.”
Featuring paintings, sculpture, works on paper, and photographs, The Art of Narrative emphasizes each artist’s unique storytelling voice. An illustration from modernist Arthur Dove; a “Rogers Group” sculpture depicting daily life from John Rogers; experimental photography by Martina Lopez, who calls her work a “visual diary;” and a monumental biographical abstract by pop artist James Rosenquist are among the noteworthy objects presented in the exhibit.
Alonzo Chappel, François Girardon, George Grosz, Daniel Ridgeway Knight, Henry Varnum Poor, Adolf Schreyer, and many others also tell their own expansive stories in The Art of Narrative. On view through April 15, 2018.
