The Reading Public Museum in Pennsylvania has announced the reinstallation of its American Gallery featuring some of its most beloved works from the collection. Leila, by Alice Kent Stoddard; Buttonwood Farm, by N. C. Wyeth; Lemons and Sugar, by Raphaelle Peale, Cotopaxi, by Frederic Church and DeWitt Clinton Boutelle; and The Brook, Montclair, by George Inness are among the works on view now through the end of April, 2018 in the second floor American Gallery. Additional works by Norman Rockwell, Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Anshutz, Peter Moran, Jasper Francis Cropsey, Worthington Whittredge, William Harnett, William Trost Richards, John George Brown, and Hermann Herzog have also been included in the newly reinstalled gallery.
Alluring portraits, detailed still lifes, and rich landscapes that hang in the American Gallery represent some of the finest works from the collection. Many were given to RPM over the last century as gifts and bequests, while others were museum purchases from acquisition funds. The Museum’s collection of American paintings, works on paper and sculpture is one of its strengths.
Curator of art, Scott Schweigert noted that, “this particular selection of works drawn from the collection includes some of the perennial favorites. So if you love Leila’s smile or the beautiful subtle shadows of N. C. Wyeth’s Buttonwood Farm, please come and reacquaint yourself with these iconic works. If the paintings are new to you, we invite you to visit and make new friends.”
