Lot 47 - "Sunday on Orchard St." 1 of 4 Oil Paintings by Issac Holtz in the 2/28 auction at Clarke.
Clarke Auction.

On Sunday, February 28th at 12 noon Clarke Auction will sell 400 lots of fine art, antiques, jewelry and midcentury modern design. Although a very well rounded sale, the fine art selection stands out because of the diversity and desirability of the lots on offer.

Having previously sold an Isaac Holtz (Polish American, b. 1927) for $46,000, a record at auction, Clarke is delighted to have four oils by the artist in this sale. The works vary in subject, from an observer’s view of New York’s historic Orchard Street to an intimate portrait of an elderly Sephardic couple, showing the artistic range and execution between 1971 and 1984. The paintings come from an estate in Long Island, New York and are estimated to sell between $8,000 and $12,000 each.

In the same vein, a small collection of paintings consigned by a Jewish Institution in New York features a finely painted oil by Samuel Seeberger, a Jewish artist active in Paris prior to his death in a Nazi concentration camp in 1940 (est. $800/$1,200), a gouache on paper of a Rabbi with children by Mane Katz (est. $1,000/$1,500), a large oil on canvas of a colorful modernist head by the Russian artist Mihail Chemiakin (est. $2,000/ $3,000), a still life and a Mexican landscape in oil by William Meyerowitz, and an exceptional surrealist landscape oil by the celebrated Israeli painter Yohanan Simon (est. $1,500/$2,500).

Lot 53 - Surrealist oil on canvas by Simon Yohanan.

Modern European art is also well represented with a vibrant embroidery by Alighiero Boetti (Italian, 1940 - 1994) entitled Udire Tra Le Parole (Read Between the Lines) from a local Rye, NY estate (est. $10,000-$15,000), a bronze bust of the French seamstress Germaine Bras by famed British artist Jacob Epstein (est. $4,000-$6,000), a large imaginative oil on canvas of a female figure, Le Repos, by contemporary French artist Jean-Pierre Roc-Roussey ($10,000/$15,000), 4 works by Joseph Floch (American/Austrian, 1895-1977) from the estate of the artist, and a 1927 European style portrait of a beauty by the Filipino painter Fernando Amorsolo ($4,000/$6,000).

A collection of 20th century prints will be sold on the 28th and includes four large and dynamic etchings by Joan Miro ($6,000/$9,000) as well as three lithographs by the artist (est. vary), a 1968 lithograph by Frank Stella, Empress of India II From The V Series ($2,000/$3,000), a limited edition offset color lithograph, La Toilette, by famed Columbian artist Fernando Botero ($4,000/$6,000), a Marc Chagall hand-colored etching from The Bible ($1,000/$1,500), and a Salvador Dali lithograph, Self Portrait Sundial ($1,000/$1,500). 19th century prints are highlighted by a hand-colored engraving by John James Audubon of the Red-Breasted Merganser Mergus Serrator ($3,000/$5,000) and etching by James Abbott McNeill Whistler The 'Adam and Eve', Old Chelsea ($1,000/$1,500).
