Among the featured auction lots are items from the Estate of Clyde Gatlin, Southbury CT. Mr. Gatlin was a familiar face at shows and flea markets throughout Connecticut, and he accumulated some wonderful examples of Chinese, Continental and American decorative arts over the course of his collecting career.
Of special interest among the Gatlin items is a large Chinese export rose mandarin punch bowl, measuring 5 ½” high, 14” diameter. The bowl is in excellent condition and features a finely detailed polychrome upper border. Also expected to draw serious interest is a Spanish school oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman, identified and inscribed lower left as Don Juan de Dios Parreno y Pardo. The portrait depicts a sea captain gesturing toward a sailing ship, with instruments of navigation in foreground on a table. Frame measurements are 28 1/4" high, 21 3/4" wide.
An anonymous oil on canvas painting of Mount Vernon, the Virginia home of George Washington, is also being sold for the Gatlin estate. The work is in a substantial gilded frame, measuring 24" high, 28" wide.
The auction also features outsider art from three private Connecticut collections; outsider art and tribal arts from a Massachusetts collector; select Asian and Chinese decorative arts from a Woodbury estate and a New York collector; fine art from the estate of Tonia Hampson, Southbury CT; American and Asian decorative arts from the estate of Clyde Gatlin, Southbury CT; American formal and country furniture from a Southport CT collector; Continental decorative arts from an East 69th Street NYC collector; American country furniture from a Guilford CT estate; contemporary fine art from a Stockbridge Massachusetts collector; and Native American decorative arts from a Madison CT estate.
