Daniel Dietrich was a well-known philanthropist, art collector, and patron of the arts living on the Main Line of Philadelphia. He was on the board of the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania and before his passing in September of 2015 gave a gift of $10 million to ICA.
We are pleased to offer 218 lots of mostly 20th century modern art as well as 132 lots of decorative arts from the Dietrich collection. Highlights include notable works by Jane Wilson, Charles G Rosenberg, Kenneth Nolan, Warren Rohrer, Gregory Gillespie, Willy Heeks, Daniel Bennett Schwartz, Edna Andrade, Robert B Wilson, Lennart Anderson, William Sartain, Bill Walton, Burton Silverman, David Leffel, Edward Baynard, James Penney, Kathy Grove, Robert Zakanitch, Harvey Dinnerstein, Wes Mills, and many more established and emerging artists, many of whom are represented by multiple lots in the sale. The addition of 60 lots from other collections to the art section include 5 ship paintings by Scott Cameron, a portrait after Francois Hubert Drouais, equestrienne oil by William Vanderbilt Allen, a portfolio by Philippe Halsman, and 3 lots descended from Joseph Napoleon, brother of Napoleon I, one an oil depicting Point Breeze, his estate home overlooking the Delaware river.
In the Dietrich decorative arts, 42 lots of silver are headlined by Georg Jensen, Kirk, Sheibler, Tiffany, David Andersen, and more. 16 lots of sponge and spatterware ceramics in rare patterns including Rainbow, Schoolhouse, Peafowl, & Thistle accompanied by Gaudy Dutch War Bonnet, Kings Rose will be sold.
13 lots of cultural collectibles feature a carved bear or wolf mask, probably Northwest, along with Roman, Greek, and other prehistoric pottery artifacts.
The Dietrich Collection has been joined with other 350 plus lots of powerful estate consignments including a porcelain collection featuring a 28” Meissen multi- part figural centerpiece depicting groupings of Neptune and Amphitrite with cherubs, maidens, and sea creatures, a Meissen figural wall clock case, pr lidded Meissen sucres, and other Meissen. 2 pairs of 16” Louis Solon Minton’s pate sur pate lidded vases will be sold along with other pate sur pate items. An assortment of beautiful Amphora figural sculptures comes from the same collection as well as other KPM, Fischer, Niderville, Hebert Freres, Rosenthal, Jerome Massier, Holzners, & Thieme porcelains. Argy Rousseau and Daum, Nancy pate de verre will be sold along with Baccarat, Lalique, Waterford, and other crystal.
48 carved and painted wood animal sculpture from the Louis Paul Jonas Studios will be sold in 19 lots. The wood gives way to bronze and other sculpture in the form of a 26” Henri Chapu, bronze, "Jeanne d'Arc a Doremy”, cast at Barbedienne, on a period ebonized pedestal. A large pair of white metal statues of Viking Warriors on ornate Victorian custom pedestals is quite impressive, as is a pr of recumbent bronze sphinx. 4 steel yard sculptures by Charles Fahlen are from the Dietrich Collection, and Jason Seley is represented by 2 “found auto parts” steel sculptures. Some impressive clocks are being offered, including a French 3 pc cloisonne & bronze set in the Asian taste and a 3 pc Tiffany & Co Louis XIV style 3 pc set that towers over 20”. The silver department is augmented by an important 7 pc William G DeMatteo sterling tea and coffee service, in addition to other lots by Gorham, Howard & Co, and other flatware and tea services.
An important identified Model 1851 Colt Navy revolver that was carried by a Chaplain in the 43rd PA Regiment in the Civil War will be sold as well as other Civil War era handguns & accoutrements. An important 1824 newspaper with President John Quincy Adams’ “Message to Congress” signed by Adams will go on the block as well as an extensive collection of leather bindings from Easton Press and Franklin Library.
Around 50 lots of fine furniture will be offered, from a carved 4 post canopy bed in the manner of Querville to dragon carved Asian pieces, to traditional high end carved American Victorian bookcases, sofas, and sideboards. There is a pair of John Fiske cast iron garden urns and fern pattern garden seating. A variety of Victorian style and period lighting will brighten the auction sales room considerably. A Steinway Model 40 console piano will undoubtedly be a good buy for someone.
Around 100 lots of important Asian porcelain, art, sculpture, and jade are being offered as well from the Dietrich Collection and others.
Last, but not least, a rare 1907 High Relief St Gaudens $20 American gold coin, slabbed and graded MS63 by PCGS will be offered.
