NEW YORK, NY – Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Gabriella Mirabelli  in On Earth and Elsewhere. The exhibition opens January 4 and runs through January 24, 2019 with an opening reception on Thursday, January 10 from 6-8 pm. Any art lover who enjoys thought-provoking artworks and meeting talented and interesting artists is encouraged to attend.

About the Artist

Gabriella Mirabelli describes herself as an artist who values simplicity, space, light, and stillness. She finds these qualities in nature and in locations as Cape Cod seascapes and snowy upstate New York winterscapes. Crepuscular river and lakeshores are the prevalent themes of her paintings. Mirabelli’s eye is drawn to liminal spaces. She chooses to paint the edge where the forest meets the plane, the water meets the shore, and day meets night. Works like Aquinnah Shallows and Croton Landing Sunset depict spaces of quiet encounter, transition and transformation that the artist prefers to paint undisturbed by human presence. Mirabelli thinks of her paintings as an analog detour from the frantic digital universe most of us inhabit today.

Stylistically, Mirabelli works in the tradition of the New York figurative painters such as Fairfield Porter. Her work also bares some connection to Alex Katz. Like these artists, she works with a reduced palette, making use of subtle tonal nuances. She also simplifies the natural shapes that dominate in her paintings to create near-minimalist, abstract, powerful compositions. Mirabelli works primarily with acrylic on canvas. Her work can be found in several private collections.

About the Exhibition

On Earth and Elsewhere unpacks the ramifications of human influence on the earth. Comprising ten artists, each work displays an image of humanity’s place in the surrounding cosmos. Taking as its point of departure different images humanity has had of itself across history, the exhibition offers something like a timeline of what humanity has accomplished, as well as what it stands to lose in the face of pressing realities like climate change.
