The end of summer is upon us, and you can harvest a bumper crop of fine art, furniture, decorative art & jewelry at Gray’s Auctioneers. The August 30th auction includes over 500 lots from estates across Northeast Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. Featuring a large collection of compelling bronzes, an abundance of fine jewelry, and a plethora of decorative art and furniture.
One of the more baroque items in the auction is lot 102, a rare Tiffany & Co. bronze mantel clock. Rising above a winged sea serpent emerging through scrolling, stylized waves is a painted and gilt enameled dial signed Tiffany & Co., New York, with Roman and Arabic numerals. Neptune, holding his trident, crowns the top of the clock along with two flanking, youthful, tritons floating amongst waves and cattails. The pendulum is marked Tiffany & Co., JLF #7299.
Lot 91 from the collection of bronzes is a pair of reclining male figures after Michelangelo (1475-1564) from the tomb of Giuliano de Medici. Lot 82 is titled ‘Bathing Venus’ after Christophe-Gabriel Allegrain, (1710-1795), and lot 69 is a bronze on marble base after Frederic Sackrider Remington (1861-1909) titled ‘The Buffalo Horse’.
Over 200 lots of fine jewelry, from a former jewelry dealer, sparkle in this auction. Lot 411 is a 14kt. yellow gold ring, set with one large, oval, blue topaz and sixteen round diamond melee. Sparkling at lot 325 is a beautiful 14kt. rose gold and diamond ring, set with a round brilliant cut diamond weighing approx. 1.54ct with a SI-2 clarity and I color, which is certified by an IGL appraisal/COA. Also within this collection at lot 467 is an 18kt. yellow gold Cartier lady's 75th Anniversary watch, which has a blue diamond dial and is signed Cartier, with the dates 1903-1978 on the dial. The dial is set with twelve round, brilliant cut diamond melee.
There is an abundance of fine paintings in this auction. Lot 6 is a whimsical oil on canvas by Elize Florence Bridell-Fox (1842-1905) titled, The Fairy Nest. A curious young girl has climbed a tree only to find a nest filled with winged fairies. In contrast, lot 10 is a more subdued oil on canvas by Juan Rimsa (1903-1978). ‘Portrait of a Woman with Cat’ reflects the calm of the feline lounging on her lap. And from the corporate collection of the Richard E. Jacobs Group is a series of chromogenic prints from Joel Meyerowitz, (b. 1938). Lots 54 – 56 are from Meyerowitz’s Porch Series shot in Provincetown in 1977.
A pair of neoclassical style, gilt, carved hardwood torchéres are lot 152. The seven light torchéres were originally from the Palace Theater in Playhouse Square, Cleveland, Ohio. Lot 106 is a Tiffany style stained glass table lamp, featuring a dragonfly shade and a four panel turtleback base.
Rounding out the August auction is a unique dining room suite designed by Bernhard Rohne for Mastercraft. Lot 285 is a hardwood, acid-etched brass and glass table, with one leaf, that seats eight people. Complementing the table and chairs is lot 283, a burled walnut and brass trim sideboard.
