Carlyle's latest online auction features nearly 200 lots of fresh-to-the-market paintings, sculpture, prints & multiples. With low starting prices and reasonable estimates, this auction offers many bargains for the sophisticated art buyer.
Old Masters Auction Highlights include:
- A Flemish landscape in the manner of David Teniers II (1610-1690). He was famous for his genre and landscape paintings with figures, especially open-air scenes. The present composition shows exactly that, travelers walking up a rocky path with a city beyond. Auction estimate is between $1,500-2,500 being an exceptional fair price for this beautifully detailed and lively painting.
- A Flemish Old Master landscape painting in the manner of Joos de Momper (1564-1635). De Momper primarily painted landscape and genre paintings and was greatly influenced by Pieter Brueghel the Elder, which can be seen in this work. This beautiful painting shows the steep slopes and high rock masses that are so well known to de Momper’s works. This work estimates between $3,000-6,000.
- A work attributed to German Baroque painter, Philipp Peter Roos (1655-1706), showing a cow and goat resting with a shepherdess. Roos became an expert in painting oxen, sheep, and goats. He specialized in Italianate landscapes decorated with animals, which this work can be closely related to. Starting bid as low as $1,500.
- A newly-discovered Flemish Old Master painting attributed to Theodoor van Thulden (1606–1669), a pupil of Peter Paul Rubens. The painting on wood panel, depicts St. Martin, atop his horse, dividing his cloak for a beggar. This appears to be a previously unknown work by van Thulden, in a similar composition to his contemporaries such as Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck, who painted this subject. The painting carries an estimate of $8,000-12,000.
- An Italian painting, attributed to Francesco Solimena (1657-1747), portraying the Virgin Regina Coeli holding the Christ Child, with Saints John the Baptist and Peter. Solimena painted many frescoes in Naples and altarpieces enjoying the technique of warm brownish shadowing and bringing attention to the figures and their draperies. The attributed work for this sale starts as low as $1,000 showing the aforementioned characteristics.
- A Dutch painting, attributed to Dutch master painter Caspar Netscher (1636-1684), who was most famous for depicting oriental rugs, silk, and brocade introducing an international style to the Northern Netherlands. The painting, featuring a musical family, shows the exceptional execution of silk so closely related to Netscher. Bid starting at $1,500.
- A work, attributed to Italian Baroque painter Giovanni Donducci (1575-1655), showing figures dancing and playing instruments. Belonging to the generation of Carracci, Donducci is well known for contributing to the decoration of the Basilica of San Domenica in Bologna. This painting, being of high quality, estimates between $8,000-12,000.
- A military scene, attributed to Dutch painter Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668). Wouwerman was famous for painting battle and military encampment scenes. This 17th-century work shows the close-up of such an encampment scene with soldiers arriving at a camp. Auction estimate between $6,000-8,000.
- A three-quarter length portrait of an artist, attributed to Bartholomeus van der Helst (1613-1670), possibly being a self-portrait of the artist himself. Being a contemporary of Rembrandt, van der Helst was the most famous portrait painter of Amsterdam during his time. This work shows the contrast between the dark, black colors and the white detailed collars and cuffs, van der Helst was so famous for. Bid starting at $1,000.
