Harris & Ruble • ART takes particular pride in this month's exhibition, “Sites and Scenes of Los Angeles,” which is the Los Angeles debut of our own Marcella Ruble, whose sculptures will be on view January 1– February 17. A reception for the artist will take place Saturday, January 19, from 5 to 8pm in the gallery's landmark Art Deco Building at 6424 Santa Monica Blvd. in Hollywood.
She conceived of the site sculptures in 1997, soon after she settled into her Los Angeles home with an incredible view. With ceramics and lusters fired over matte glazes, Marcella created one-of-a kind trapezoidal box-like sculptures ranging in size from knee-high to less than a foot. They were abstract landscapes—part city, part skyline, part nature, reflecting what she saw from her patio.
Recently Marcella discovered a new digital technology that has allowed her to transfer her photographic panoramas of these vistas onto her sculptures, which now serve as “canvases” to reflect her unique viewpoint of Los Angeles.
A native of Chicago, Marcella Ruble is an independent scholar, artist and art historian. She has exhibited and sold her art and jewelry at galleries in Los Angeles, New York, Miami and Chicago. She took her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Sculpture at the University of Illinois and earned a Masters Degree from the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in Decorative Arts, Design and Material Culture.
In addition to the artist’s reception on Saturday, January 19th from 5-8 pm, the gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 1-5 pm or by appointment.
