America at Heart: Behind the Shutter celebrates the colors, characters and contours of America’s West captured through photography by Michael Fain, Tom Korologos, Kathryn Rabinow, Gayle Waterman, and emerging artist, Devin Pool, with an Artists’ Reception Saturday, September 9th from 5 to 7PM.

“This group of photographers captures both the mysticism and true-grit realism of the West,” shares Ann Korologos. “From Waterman’s macro perspective of its antiqued surfaces, to Pool’s larger than life landscapes, to the mystic, minimalist black and whites of Fain, to the journalistic realism of Korologos, to the double-take abstracts of Kathryn Rabinow, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.”

Michael Fain is a long-time resident of Aspen, Colorado. Michael has been a photographer for over 60 years, but really engaged in the practice after he went digital and evolved the scope and tone of his images to a sophisticated blend of representational and abstract. The semi-abstract style of his snow-covered mountains, with their mystical “other worldly” quality, is most influenced by Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto. His canyon scenes are enhanced via chiaroscuro, the juxtaposition of light and shadow.

Tom Korologos lives in Washington, DC where he served as the U.S. Ambassador to Belgium, and has been splitting his time with the Roaring Fork Valley for 17 years. Tom is a lifelong photographer, former journalist, and earned his M.S. at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Starting with a Kodak 116 film camera 70 years ago, and evolving to Leicas and Nikons, Tom’s images are sought after for their authenticity in preserving a visual record of the Colorado West. Korologos’ photographs combine a journalistic sensibility with an eye for capturing the poetic in the ordinary world.

Kathryn Rabinow is a Houston-based photographer who spends as much time as possible in the Roaring Fork Valley. Using her camera and computer, she creates both abstract and representational images that reveal the essence and unexpected beauty of everyday scenes and objects. Rabinow’s work shares the attitude of Georgia O’Keeffe, showing “not only what is, but what could be.” Her images are particularly eye-catching in their bold lines and colors. “When I look at the finished product I see the concrete genesis as clearly as I see the colorful exterior.”

Gayle Waterman is a native of Texas, now living and working in a restored 19th century barn relocated from Vermont to Basalt. Waterman’s love for all things antique and reclaimed inspired her to look at these surfaces through the macro lens of a camera, revealing beauty one could not see with the naked eye. Using a tripod and long exposures, Waterman’s photographs require planning, yet the outcomes often have a big element of surprise. Her work encourages the viewer to see beyond the obvious.

Devin Roy Pool is an Aspen-based photographer from Texas. Pool’s work is founded on the power of the vista and capturing a unique perspective through geographic isolation, low light landscapes, or both. The ideas often start with a topographical map, study of the stars and seasons, low-light elements, and a multi-day journey into the wilderness.
