Featured 19th Century Painter: William Guy Wall (Irish/American 1792 – 1864)

William Guy Wall was already an accomplished artist before emigrating from Ireland to New York City. He was a founder of the National Academy of Design and was also a key figure in the Hudson River School of landscape painting. Between 1820 and 1828 his watercolors of the Hudson River and of New York City were published in several editions of his “Hudson River Portfolio”. As a landscapist, artist William Guy Wall was especially skilled at creating atmospheric perspective, using effects not commonly used at this time. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, and the Apollo Association, New York City.
