Featured 19th Century Painter: Paul (John Paul) Bransom (American 1885 – 1979)

John Paul Bransom was born in Washington, D.C. and had been drawing animals from early childhood. At the age of 13 he became an apprentice-draftsman assisting with patent drawings. He spent his free time at the Washington Zoo sketching the animals. Bransom moved to New York where he was employed with the “New York Evening Journal’ drawing the comic strip “The Latest News from Bugville”. Artist John Paul Bransom’s goal was to become animal illustrator for magazines and he spent a great deal of time at the Bronx Zoo.
