Bag It! The Art of the Shopping Bag
Opening April 29th, the museum will feature an exhibition of shopping bags from around the world. Looking at the graphic nature of shopping bags, the exhibit will give insight into their rise as a utilitarian item that evolved into a status symbol for shoppers and merchants. The evolution of bags continued as merchants saw the value in their creating a brand and eventually commissioned artists to design them. One signature group was Bloomingdale’s artist designed bags, which are still being created today. This exhibit is drawn from the collection of Jean Gromoll and will cover local stores such as Hager’s Department Store to the classic Tiffany blue bag.
The exhibit, on view from April 29 to June 25, 2017, will feature shopping bags of various formats and for such companies as Steiff, Bloomingdales, Hager’s, Watt & Shand and Bonwit Teller, among others. An opening reception will be held at the Lancaster Museum of Art on Friday, April 28, 2017 from 5-8 p.m.
This exhibit is sponsored by Donald Burkholder.
