Sayosapa: Visionary Artist and ‘Stone Doctor’ of Fort Peck, Montana

The collapse of “buffalo culture” and the imposition of colonial rule in the northern plains of the late 19th century required Indian people to adopt creative strategies in order to survive. This year’s Donald Danforth Jr. Lecture concerns a man named Sayosapa, or “Black Prairie Chicken” (c.1850-1902), a Yu’wipi, or a “stone doctor,” who reinvented himself as an artist during the early years of the Fort Peck Reservation. An internationally recognized scholar in the field of Native American art and culture, David Penney, is the first associate director of the National Museum of the American Indian’s new scholarship department.
