Focus on the Collection: Engraving in Renaissance Germany
Focus on the Collection: Engraving in Renaissance Germany presents a distinctive sampling of 15th- and 16th-century German engravings from the Museum's print collection and from distinguished local collections. The selection covers an intriguing range of subjects from ancient history, mythology and Christianity to the earthly worlds of courtly love and peasants. Martin Schongauer, Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach, and Sebald Beham are among the artists represented. The art of engraving is historically linked to the ancient art of sculpture, but it began to be utilized as a method for creating works of art on paper only during the late 15th century, when goldsmiths and painters alike began printing their designs from metal plates. The works on view highlight a variety of technical approaches, revealing many possible effects, from forceful and dark to soft and silvery. Museum Hours: Tuesday-Sunday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm; Friday, 10:00 am to 9:00 pm; closed Monday
