Collectors responded to the financial crisis by selecting the best 20th-century classics, Old Masters, wine and jewelry at international auctions. They shunned investment in some contemporary art as prices dropped by half and sales fell 75 percent. Notable pieces of modern furniture soared such as Marc Newsom's “Lockheed Lounge” chair for 1.1 million pounds. A Raphael drawing topped auction sale prices for 2009 when it sold for $47.5 million, beating a Matisse still life of cowslips that made an artist record of $45.6 million.
