Charlton Hall Galleries in Columbia, South Carolina, is pleased to feature a large array of antiques and fine art in its upcoming September 11-12th sale.

This two-day event will showcase over 1000 European and American items from Southern estates, Bank Trusts and private collections. Included among the collections is a trove of paintings from a prominent Upstate South Carolina art collector.

The collection consists of works mainly by late 19th and early 20th century American artists including Anthony Thieme, William R. Leigh, Emile Albert Gruppe, Walter Emerson Baum, Frederick Judd Waugh and others. The majority of the art depicts landscapes from quaint New England coastal villages to the majestic mountains of the American West.

Also offered is a New York Street Scene by David Davidovich Burliuk from the Estate of Joseph Amisano, a celebrated Atlanta, Georgia architect.

Another Georgia collection, included, emphasizes fine European paintings and consists of works by Evert Pieters , Johann Gottlieb Prestel , Charles Michel Maria Verlat  and the French artist Paul Alexandre Alfred Leroy, famous for his depictions of Algeria and Mediterranean France.

True to form, Charlton Hall’s auction will also include exceptional examples of Southern art including a William Posey Silva Charleston scene, two unique Alfred Hutty oils, and a distinctive Florida scene by William Aiken Walker.

Several important pieces of Southern stoneware will start Sunday’s sale. Among the featured lots is a c.1850 water cooler by Chandler highlighted in the publication, Crossroads of Clay. There are also two pieces by the enslaved potter, Dave including a rare 1849 jug.

Southern furniture collectors will be interested in an inlaid mahogany serpentine sideboard made in Virginia circa 1800. The piece, possibly made in Richmond or Petersburg, is from a North Carolina private collection. Other key American furniture pieces include a Massachusetts Chippendale mahogany bowfront chest of drawers, a New York Federal mahogany linen press and American Classical mahogany tester bed from the Alabama Black Belt. Exceptional offerings from abroad include a Regency brass-inlaid rosewood center table circa 1825 and a Gillow walnut pedestal desk from the 19th century.

Other highlights from the sale include a George III sterling tea urn by Henry Greenway, dated 1777, a Frank Whiting sterling coffeepot, c. 1900, an impressive French ormolu-mounted Boulle bracket clock, Vincenti & Cie, Pairs, c.1855, a French gilt-bronze barometer signed Collin 19th century and a Tiffany Studios Acorn shade and bronze table lamp c.1905.
