Noted environmental artist Christo has gained the US government’s approval for his controversial wrapping project on the Arkansas River.  The project, called “Over the River,” required an extensive environmental impact report and has been in the making for over 25 years, when Christo and his now deceased partner Jeanne-Claude first conceived the idea. 

“Over the River” will span intervals of a 42-mile stretch of the Arkansas River in southern Colorado using Christo’s signature fabric panels. It will be installed for only two weeks in 2014. The artist will fund the $50 million project.

It is estimated the installation will draw over 400,000 visitors and generate $121 million in economic output.  Nonetheless, amid a variety of environmental concerns, not everyone is convinced that the project’s approval is a positive move. 

According to Christo--who is perhaps best known for his “Gates” project in Central Park, New York--the project has already made history because of the dialogue it has created between art and the public.
