Still from the film Gerhard Richter: Painting (2011).

In one decade, Art Basel Miami Beach has catapulted from lively newcomer on the art fair scene in the Americas to an annual destination for the international contemporary art set. This year's 10th edition, from Dec. 1 to 4, features more than 260 leading galleries from North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa, showcasing works by more than 2,000 artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Satellite fairs such as the inaugural edition of AOA Tribal Art Miami, museum exhibitions, exclusive art parties, public installations, and a new auction venue are among the concurrent activities that draw tens of thousands of visitors each year.

Of note for 2011, special programming from Art Basel includes the U.S. premiere of Corinna Belz's film 'Gerhard Richter Painting' which presents an intriguing portrait of the artist at work.

Shot primarily during the spring and summer of 2009, when Richter was working on a series of large abstract paintings in his studio, the documentary film gives compelling insights into Richter's artistic working process and approach to painting. The film captures the artist as he goes through the very personal and tension-filled processes of artistic creation, contemplating, waiting, rejecting, reworking and occasionally destroying work only to begin anew.

'Gerhard Richter Painting', Germany, 2011 (97 minutes) will be shown at the Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, at 8.30pm on December 2, 2011. The screening is followed by a Q&A with the director Corinna Belz, moderated by Louisa Buck, The Art Newspaper's Contemporary Art Correspondent. Admission is free, but seats are limited.
