The Helen Frankenthaler painting "Carousel," donated to the Palm Springs Art Museum by the late interior designer Steve Chase, sold for $3.9 million Wednesday at a Sotheby's auction in New York, reports the Desert Sun.
The deaccession of the gift was to cover "direct care" costs for the museum's collection.
"Under COVID-19, we've had a really hard time, primarily not as much about philanthropy, but primarily because we have no way of earning income through admission, through facility rentals, activities of the Annenberg Theater, the store and the restaurant," said Palm Springs Art Museum Executive Director and CEO Louis Grachos.
