On Wednesday, March 29th, starting at 6 p.m., radio host Savona Bailey-McClain will conduct three radio talks at The Photography Show presented by AIPAD during the March 29th opening night at Pier 94. The interviews will be held at the AIPAD auditorium with Pat Cleveland, known as one of America’s top Black super models, together with gallerists Etheleen Staley and Takouhy Wise of the Staley-Wise Gallery in SoHo. In addition, interviews will also be held with Lee Marks from Lee Marks Gallery in Indianapolis; Stephen Bulger from Stephen Bulger Gallery in Toronto, Canada and Kraige Block, Executive Director of the Throckmorton Fine Arts Gallery in midtown will talk about the future of photography in the art world.

Savona Bailey-McClain, known on the air as the Host/Producer for the radio show State of the Arts NYC, which is heard on Friday nights on WBAI FM Radio and live streamed on Tunein.com. Bailey-McClain is a public art curator and conducts tours to art dealers and galleries in Chelsea, LES, Upper East Side, DUMBO and Williamsburg.

The 37th edition of The Photography Show presented by AIPAD will open in their new home at Pier 94. Promising to excite collectors and viewers with rare 19th century works to exceptionally new contemporary photographs.

In its new location at Pier 94, The Photography Show will be held from Thursday, March 30 through Sunday, April 2, 2017, with an expanded program of exhibitions and events. More than 115 galleries from around the world will offer contemporary, modern, and 19th-century photographs as well as photo-based art, video, and new media. Presented by AIPAD (the Association of International Photography Art Dealers), the 37th edition of the Show will commence with a Vernissage on Wednesday, March 29. One of the world’s most highly anticipated annual art fairs; the Show is the longest-running and foremost exhibition dedicated to the photographic medium.

THE TALKS

Fashion photographs dates back to the 1850s in the court of Napoleon III. But it took almost another century before the medium gained wide spread access in the early 20th century. Starting with images that Baron Adolph de Meyers took for Condé Nast.

Pat Cleveland became an international icon during her day as a supermodel. She has worked for major fashion designers including, Armani, Halston, Stephen Burrows and Valentino, both on and off the runway.  Cleveland has also been seen in the work of important photographers including, Avedon, Helmut Newton, Horst and Steven Meisel.

Throughout her illustrious career, Pat has appeared on the pages of the world’s most prestigious fashion publications such as, Ebony, Essence, Interview, W Magazine and Vogue. Her 2014 controversial March cover and spread in “Numero” by Tom Ford was censored in Russia. Her beauty has not been overlooked by the art world having sat for Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali.

Cleveland will be joined in the first interview with Etheleen Staley and Takouhy Wise, principals of the Staley-Wise Gallery. Founded in 1981, Staley-Wise represents and shows classic photographers like Lillian Bassman, Helmut Newton, Louise Dahl-Wolfe and then contemporary photographers such as Herb Ritts, Ellen von Unwerth and Patrick DeMarchelier.

The talk will explore how fashion photography has exploded and it is attracting personalities like Brooklyn Beckham to pursue a career in the field.

The second talk will feature Lee Marks, a photography dealer and consultant. Her career started in NYC where she spent eight years with Marlborough before consulting with Pierre Apraxine and then becoming a curator of the Gilman Paper Company Collection.

Her gallery, now based in Indianapolis, focuses on a select group of contemporary photographers.

Stephen Bulger and Kraige Block will join the last talk. Stephen Bulger has been practicing photography since a youth. He studied at Ryerson University’s School of Image Arts. After college he started organizing exhibitions and participating in art fairs before opening his gallery. Stephen Bulger Gallery maintains an inventory of approximately 15,000 photographs with a special emphasis on works that define the documentary tradition as well as historical photographs from Canada.

Bulger has served as a President of the Board for the Association of International Photography Art Dealers.

Kraige Block is the Executive Director of Throckmorton Fine Arts in midtown NY and a Vice President of AIPAD (Association of International Photography Art Dealers). The gallery has been an exhibitor at this New York event for more than 20 years. Throckmorton has also been a member of ATADA (The Antique Tribal Art Dealers Association, Inc.) and the International Association for Ancient Asian and Tribal Art (formerly NADAOPA).

Both gallerists are past presidents of AIPAD.
