Sensorial Realities: Voyages Onward
- June 29, 2017 09:59
In Sensorial Realities, Agora Gallery's new group exhibition, every canvas on the wall is a portal to a different world. The ten artists featured here offer some of the most seductive alternative universes a viewer can hope for, whether it's a reinterpretation of Gilded Age portraiture or a compression of twenty-first century concerns into a surreal landscape. They create spaces out of oil, acrylic, stone, ceramic, and mixed media which break down barriers and open up new ideas.
Some pieces on display are outright landscapes. There are stripped-down paintings of endless plains, which are made inviting by simplifying the brushstrokes yet unknowable by taking away the horizon line. There are scenes of single people amongst their own place in the land - at once less intimidating but more psychologically fraught. There are classic views of merry seas and beautiful gardens that are made contemporary with their exaggerated colors and forceful compositions. Then there are the "worlds" of another kind: probing portraits, abstracted color fields, and symbol-laden tableaux.
Sensorial Realities opens July 5 and runs through July 25, 2017 with an opening reception Thursday, July 6 from 6 - 8 pm. Entrance is free.
