Robert Walker: New Works at Heather James Fine Art
In his first solo exhibition with Heather James Fine Art, Robert Walker presents an exhibition of new paintings and drawings. The visual effect of Walker’s recent work is both subtle and hypnotic. Approaching painting as a sculptor, Walker’s new work combines the usage of intricate bas-relief surfaces produced from multi-layers of segmented paint that are fused together, producing multi-colored images and topographical surface areas. Walker has long been a student of Buddhism and his abstract compositions are variations of traditional images used in Buddhist illustration. Walker’s drawings are essentially non-traditional in the use of materials and include a series of what he calls “Hard Drawings” which are variations and meanderings on the mandala. In Buddhist theory, mandalas are created as a tool for visualization and meditation. The mandala is a container of energy, a universal symbol that relates to the imagery we contemplate on a cosmic level and realize on the temporal level.
