Jackson Hole Art Auction announces highlights and seeks consignments

Jackson, Wyoming – September 16-17, 2016 – Trailside Galleries and the Gerald Peters Gallery are pleased to announce the tenth annual Jackson Hole Art Auction, scheduled for September 16-17, 2016 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Both sessions will be held at the award-winning Center for the Arts in downtown Jackson Hole. Jason Brooks will serve as auctioneer.

Highlights to date include John Clymer’s Moving Camp, a 19.5 x 39.5 oil on canvas estimated at $150,000-$250,000. Awarded the Gold Medal in Oil at the 1972 Cowboy Artists of America Exhibition, Moving Camp illustrates the hardships of the Crow Indians traveling through Wyoming after the fall hunt. Martin Grelle’s Of One Heart (oil/canvas, 40 x 30) is estimated at $75,000-$125,000. Works by Cowboy Artists of America member Martin Grelle remain highly sought after. Charles M. Russell’s The Rescue (pen and ink/paper, 17.5 x 12.5), a dramatic illustration for Walter Cooper’s A Most Desperate Situation, will be offered at $40,000-$60,000. Other important western highlights include works by Robert Lougheed, E.S. Paxson, and Olaf Wieghorst.

Featured wildlife works include Bob Kuhn’s All He Surveys, a 24 x 36 acrylic on board completed in 2002 for the National Museum of Wildlife Art’s Western Visions exhibition. The striking grizzly bear subject is estimated at $100,000-$200,000. Other Kuhn offerings include South Texas Whitetail (acrylic/board, 12 x 20) and Moose in Freshly Fallen Snow (acrylic/board, 12 x 15), estimated at $40,000-$60,000 and $25,000-$45,000, respectively.

The Jackson Hole Art Auction is also pleased to announce the third annual Top Tier juried competition. Top Tier artists, chosen by invitation, consist of a select group of contemporary artists holding exemplary auction records. An esteemed jury of museum curators will award a $10,000 cash prize to the artist whose work is deemed of significant merit. The jury is as follows: Laura F. Fry, Curator of Art, Gilcrease Museum; Mindy N. Besaw, PhD, Curator, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art; James H. Nottage, Vice President and Chief Curatorial Officer, Gund Curator of Western Art, History, and Culture, Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. Artists slated to participate include William Acheff, Ken Carlson, Michael Coleman, Jenness Cortez, Logan Hagege, Z.S. Liang, Bonnie Marris, Mian Situ, and Tucker Smith. The award will be announced prior to the start of the auction, during which all Top Tier paintings will be sold.
